Bush to sign NJ water protection funding

MOUNT OLIVE, NJ � A new federal bill may soon be approved by President George W. Bush to save land that provides drinking water for 3.5 million state residents, according to a Nov. 23 report by the Mt. Olive Chronicle.

The bill would authorize up to $10 million a year for 10 years to buy and preserve land in the Highlands, a swath of 2 million acres of primarily wooded land that stretches through seven counties in northwestern New Jersey and in parts of New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut, the article said.

The land is a vital habitat for numerous plant and animal species. It also is a recreational attraction for 14 million annual visitors, the newspaper reported. Read More....
